Narrative: This ciborium was made in 1984 for a special mass that was held at Quidi Vidi Lake in St. John's when Pope John Paul the Second visited Newfoundland in 1984. The clay used to make the ciborium is Newfoundland clay, as each province designed and made their own ciboria, and did not order them from an outside source. Of the ten ciboria in the Basilica's collection, each was only used once, and any other additional ciboria that were used were given to parishes throughout Newfoundland as gifts commemorating both Pope John Paul's visit to Newfoundland, as well as the 200th year of the Roman Catholic Church in Newfoundland. This ciborium is brown on the outside with a blue-coloured interior. The outside also features the official logo of the 200th Anniversary Year and the dates 1784 - 1984. The clay used in crafting the ciboria was reportedly taken from a backyard which was being dug out for the foundation of a house in the Woody Point area.
History of Use: This ciborium was used only once, during the Mass that Pope John Paul the Second held at Quidi Vidi Lake in St. John's in 1984. The occasion was to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Roman Catholic Church in Newfoundland.
