Description: | The Pallium Window is located in the south wall of the Basilica above the organ gallery. The stained glass window was erected to commemorate the establishment of the Ecclesiastical Province of Newfoundland, with the conferring of the Pallium on Archbishop Howley. The translation of the inscription across the window reads "Commemorative of the Conferring of the Pallium, June 23rd, 1905." The Arms of the three Dioceses which form the Ecclesiastical Province can be seen at the bottom of the window. |
Narrative: | The Pallium Window is located in the south wall of the Basilica above the organ gallery. The stained glass window was erected to commemorate the establishment of the Ecclesiastical Province of Newfoundland, with the conferring of the Pallium on Archbishop Howley. The other Prelates include Bishop McDonald of Harbour Grace on the Archbishop's right (who conferred the pallium to Archbishop Howley), and to the Archbishop's left is Bishop Neil McNeil from St. George's, Newfoundland. In all, there are over twenty-five figures depicted in the window, and among them are clergymen, dignitaries, altar boys and cross-bearers, and the High Altar forms the background of the window. Each pallium vestment is bestowed either by the Pope, or by his representative, to the Archbishop. Each Bishop receives his own pallium and upon his death it is interred with him, and is not passed on to the next Archbishop |
History of Use: | The Pallium Window was made in the workshop of M. Louis Koch in Beauvais, France and was presented to the Basilica by the Society of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In recent years, the window has been removed but is currently undergoing restoration so that it may be reinstalled. |
