Description : | This surveying transit is made up of a small metal telescope that has been mounted to a vertical steel disc. The disc rotates vertically and has been attached to another disc that rotates horizontally. This second disc has been mounted onto a smaller round brass base, though this base remains stationary while the surveying transit is in use. The surveying transit is black and dark yellow in colour, and is made from brass, with glass in the telescope. The box that the surveying transit is pictured in is wooden, with a metal lock and a leather strap for carrying. |
Commentaires : | A surveying transit, or theodolite, is a small telescope which is able to within a horizontal and vertical axis. When the telescope is pointed at a particular object, it is then possible to measure the horizontal and vertical axes of the object with great precision. Also, the telescope is able to flop over, to allow for easy back-sighting and doubling of angles to reduce errors. In mines, particularly, the surveying transit would be used to measure the angle at which the holes would need to be drilled, as the proper angle was important when it came to removing the minerals with explosives. |
