Description : This killick is comprised of a large grey and brown rectangular rock and six light and dark brown pieces of wood. Two of the pieces of wood are flat and wide, and made the shape of a 'X' underneath the rock. The other four pieces of wood are long and round and are used to hold the rock in place on top of the other two pieces of wood. This is done by tying the four round pieces of wood together at the top using brown twine, and by drilling holes in flat pieces of wood, so the round pieces can extend down through them.
Commentaires : A killick is a homemade anchor that is made from wood and a heavy rock. It is believed that a visitor passing through the community of Tilt Cove noticed that there was a large amount of copper in the rock, and this eventually led to the founding of the Tilt Cove mine.
Fonctions : The killick is a lightweight anchor made from a large stone and wood. As it is lightweight, it is unlikely that it was used to anchor a boat, and would most likely have been used to help anchor lobster traps, or other types of fishing gear.
