Description : This artefact is a basic pocket watch. The pocket watch is made of a silvered metal with a plastic face cover. The face consists of a printed disk of paper that has eleven black numbers on it. The six does not appear on the face as a smaller circular second hand has been inset at the bottom of the face. The second hand counter has no numbers, indicating the numerical units by a series of hatch marks instead. Printed on the face just under the 12 is the company name "Westclox" and the pattern name "Pocket Ben." The reverse of the watch has "Made in Canada" stamped on it. The winding knob is situated at the top of the watch and is surrounded by a metal bar that has a chain attached to it.
Commentaires : The Western Clock Manufacturing Company was established at LaSalle Illinois in the late 19th century. They began production of pocket watches in 1899. The Pocket Ben, one of their more popular designs, began production in 1919. In the early years the company shipped their watches to Canada, but in 1920 they opened a manufacturing plant in Peterborough, Ontario. The Western Clock Company maintained its Canadian factory until 1989 when it closed the doors and moved production to a foreign country where labour was cheaper. The Western Clock Company closed its doors for good in 2001 after more than 100 years of production.
Fonctions : This Watch was given to James Butler by Alex Grouchy.
