Description : The Jubilee Trophy is a silver plated trophy and is comprised of a footed base to which three oars have been attached. Upon these three oars sits a silver cup which bears the following inscription on the front: 1837 - 1887 Victoria's Jubilee Regatta 1St Prize Single Scull won by William Squires St. John's N.F. Land. On the back of the cup, the figure of a Regatta Committee Member has been engraved, with the Starter's Gun, a shotgun, in his hand.
Commentaires : This trophy, known as the Jubilee Trophy, was awarded only once, at the Jubilee Regatta on the 10th of August, 1887. The Royal St. John's Regatta was known as the Jubilee Regatta in 1887 to coincide with the Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee, and this trophy was presented that year, also in honour of Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee. The trophy itself is silver plated, and was awarded as 1st prize, along with 10 dollars, in a single scull race that was won by William Squires in the Nina, with a time of 12 minutes and 33 seconds. As such, the following has been engraved on the front of the trophy: "1837-1887 Victoria's Jubilee Regatta 1st Prize Single Scull won by William Squires St. John's, N.F. Land." A figure of a Regatta Committee member has been engraved on the back, holding a shotgun, as this was the Starter's Gun. William Squires left Newfoundland sometime after winning this race. however, and moved to New Jersey, where he opened his own business. As the trophy was given to him and not taken back at the end of the day, Mr. Squires took the Jubilee Trophy with him and carefully packaged it and placed it in the rafters of his New Jersey business. The trophy then became forgotten and was "lost" for 50 years, before it was found by the people who bought Mr. Squires' business from him when he retired. The trophy was then returned to Mr. Squires' family, and in June 2002, Alma Squires, widow of George R. Squires, a descendant of William Squires, presented the cup to the Royal St. John's Regatta Museum.
Fonctions : This trophy was presented only once, at the Golden Jubilee Regatta in 1887. It was then brought to New Jersey by William Squires, before being presented to the Royal St. John's Regatta Museum in June 2002.
