Description : | This photo is of a framed copy of a silk program that was worn by Regatta Committee members. These programs would be made from black ink, printed onto a silk ribbon. Listed on the program are the entries in the Regatta for 1888, as well as the starting times for each of the races that year, and other events that were to take place that day. |
Commentaires : | Also known as a Regatta Ribbon, this Silk Program was originally printed in 1888 by J.W. McCoubrey on silk, and is the oldest known Regatta Ribbon still in existence. The copy of the program that the Royal St. John's Regatta Museum has in it's collection is not the original program, however, but is a photo of the original taken by Gerry Boland of Studio Two. The original was kept in the vault of St. Thomas' Church, but appears to have been lost. |
Fonctions : | This program was worn by the members of the Regatta Committee on the day of the Regatta in 1888 so they would know the starting times of, and the crews competing in, each of the races that day. This type of program would not be worn right-side up, however, but rather pinned upside-down to the chest of a member of the Regatta Committee. This was so that member would be able to hold up the program and read it without unpinning it, but it would not be possible for anyone else to stand in front of them and read it. |
