| Description : | The artifact is a trying plane. It is a wooden rectangular block with a natural handle on the back. The plane has a square opening near the center for an iron blade or bit and a wooden wedge. This plane is also known as a "trueing plane." The trying or trueing plane was used for leveling floors and roughing. It was handmade and the bit or iron was made from an old file. |
| Commentaires : | The plane is an improvement on the drawing knife. It is pushed away from the body rather than pulled toward it and far superior in workmanship. Planes were made of hard wood, walnut, oak, maple, cherry, apple, and others. Generally, planes can be separated into four basic types according to the function: beading, beveling, molding or smoothing. |
