Description : | A brown iron last used by Cobblers (Shoemakers) to repair shoes. The long iron post that was used with this last is missing. The last has a smooth surface which has been cast to mimic the curve of a foot in a boot or shoe, with the front section curving upwards slightly at the toe, and in slightly at the arch of the foot. The reverse of the last has a raised socket roughly around where the ankle is situated. The toe bears the last number and letter size but it is unreadable on this last. The iron post was used to socket the last on with the sole facing the worker. Similar types of cast iron lasts date back to the late 19th century. |
