| Description : | An iron blade attached to a shoe-shaped piece of wood. Strings are threaded through holes in the wood to help fasten the skate to the bottom of a shoe or boot. There are little screws in the center and a strap attached to the back to help secure the boot or shoe. Homemade skates were commonly laced to the bottoms of shoes or boots and used for recreational skating on ponds around Newfoundland in the first half of the twentieth century. |
