Description : | A black and gold wooden frame with glass. It has a picture of the model "The Bear" which is on display at the Philadelphia Maritime Museum. The S.S. Bear came to Newfoundland in 1874 and fished the seal fishery for eight springs. The Bear was owned by Grieve & Co. of Greenock, Scotland. In 1884 she was purchased by the U.S. Government for one hundred thousand dollars to be one of the ships of the Greely Relief Squadron. On April 24, 1884 the crew of the Bear with Captain Ash as ice pilot were first to see and contact the survivors of the ill-fated Greely Arctic Expedition. There were six survivors out of twenty-five. On July 17, 1884 the squadron (three vessels) arrived at St. John's with survivors on board and on August 2nd they arrived in Portsmouth, U.S.A. where they were given a tremendous welcome by the ships of the American Navy. The S.S. Bear was called the world's greatest adventure ship. It is estimated that she rescued 5000 people. The S.S. Bear was lost at sea in a March gale in 1963, when being towed from Halifax, Nova Scotia to Philadelphia, U.S.A. |
