Description : The artifact is a pod auger. It is made of iron and is brown in color. The T-shape handle extends into a squrare shape shaft that has a grooved out semi-circle at the end of the auger. The initials G.L. is on the auger shaft. In making a vessel pump for a schooner it was positioned in the socket end of the boring shaft and used in boring the tunnel through the end of the stick. The pod auger was the first tool used when boring a hole. Larger tools were used to make the hole bigger.
