Description : | The artifact consists of two oil lamps, two lamp holders, two lamp reflectors and two brackets. The two lamps are made of clear glass. The oil font is round with an opening at the top where a brass ring called a collar is cemented. Attached to the collar is a brass device called the burner which has a raiser knob that adjusts the wick. The wick is a woven cotton ribbon, cord or cylinder that draws the oil into the burner from the font. The chimney holder is also attached to the rim of the burner. The chimneys are long, oval-shaped with a white design around the center. The chimney provides proper air flow for a bright flame. The latticed lamp holders are made of iron and are painted black. It has a bowl shape in front which holds the lamps. On the back there is a rectangle arm which goes into the wall bracket. The metal reflectors attaches to the wall holder. The brackets are a rectangular shape had has a hole on each end to nail them to a wall. The bracket has a raised u-shape in the middle where the arm of the bracket is inserted. It is known as a "wall bracket lamp" and it came into use int the late 1800's. Ths wick is missing on lamp "A" and one of the brackets has a piece broken of the bottom. |
