Description : | Four heading tools of different shapes and sizes. They are used to form the head of a bolt or nail that is partially forged or upset, and to square or round the shank. Some heading tools are made with a round hole on one side and a square hole on the opposite side. The heading tool is placed on the anvil with its hole centered over either the hardy or pritchel holes, or over the edge of the anvil. Holding the rod with the tongs, it is heated and the end is upset (enlarged) by hitting it with a hand hammer in a vise or on the anvil. It is upset until a head has been roughly formed. Next it is placed in the heading tool and hammered until the iron reaches the proper dimensions. |
