Description : The Memorial Plaque was issued after the First World War to the Next of Kin of all British and Empire service personnel who were killed as a result of the war. The bronze plaque was designed by Edward Carter Preston and includes an image of Britannia holding a trident in her right hand, an olive wreath in her left hand above the name tablet, with the British lion by her side. Below the tablet is an oak spray with acorns. The dolphins represent Britain's power at sea. Underneath the lion is second lion tearing apart the German eagle. Around the table medal we read " He died for freedom and honour" This Memorial Plaque was given to Captain Pickup's sister, Miss Doris M. Pickup with a note of gratitude from His Majesty the King, and a conveyance by the Honourable Minister of Militia and Defence.  Captain Walter M Willett Pickup was born April 15, 1893 at Granville Ferry, Annapolis County. He was sent to France to join the 14th Bn. On June 13, 1916, he was wounded at Ypres, "gun shot wound eye". He was evacuated to England and admitted to the I.O.D.E. Hospital for Officers at Hyde Park, London. Upon his return to the front, "in trenches when a shell burst in dugout and fumes spread everywhere causing a severe loss of blood left him very weak. On October 26, 1916, he was sent to France to rejoin the 14th Bn. in the field. Promoted to Acting Captain on February 10, 1917. On April 9, 1917, at the Battle of Vimy Ridge, he was killed in action. On April 14, 1920, a Memorial Cross was sent to his mother Mrs. Lily L.E. Pickup of Granville Ferry. C.E.F. Burial Register: "Previously reported 'Missing believed killed', now Killed in Action, 9 Apr 1917, during an attack South East of Neuville-St Vaast, he was hit in the head and body by rifle bullets and killed." CWGC Burial: Nine Elms Military Cemetery, Thelus, Grave I.A. 30: "In memory  of Captain Walter Willett Pickup, 14th Bn., Canadian Infantry (Quebec Regiment) who died age 23 on 9 Apr 1917, son of Hon. S.W.W. Pickup and Lily L.E. Pickup of Granville, Annapolis, Nova Scotia.
