Commentaires : | Remi Benoit, born Jan 3 1842 at D'Escousse, Richmond County, Cape Breton the son of Jacques an Marine Benoit. He was instrumental in the founding of Societe l'Assomption in 1902, a Life Insurance and Financial Services company. Its' start was in the Boston area, but eventually the headquarters moved to Moncton, NB. Benoit was a strong promoter of Acadian culture and organizations. According to the 1871 census for D'Escousse, Richmond County, Benoit's occupation was listed as Inspector of Schools. He was first married to Deloma Pertus of Poulamond, Richmond County in 1869, Their first child Mary Louisa was born 29 Sept 1870.; two sons Albert and Alphonse were born in the next few years. Delvina / Deloma dies of consumption 23 March 1875. Remi Benoit's second marriage was to Salina daughter of Hyacinth and Julia Martel of Arichat. A son Amadeus was born in May 1880. On the 1881 census Remi Benoit is listed as the Collector of Customs at Arichat. |
