Description : Daniel Brownlow Fond. History: (From "The Dartmouthians" by Harry Chapman) Daniel Brownlow, former mayor of Dartmouth 1976-1985. He was born in Northern Ireland in 1920, moving to Alberta with his family at the age of seven. During WWII, he enlisted in the RCN and was posted to Halifax in 1943 for officer training. At the outbreak of the Korean War, he re-enlisted. He was posted back to Halifax afterwards as the Master Attendant and Assistant Queen's Harbour Master. In 1963, he entered municipal politics, winning Dartmouth's Ward Four seat. He was returned three times, twice by acclamation. He was on the Dartmouth School Board for 10 years, six as chairman. He ran for and won the Mayor's seat in 1976. During his tenure, he focused on the regeneration of the Dartmouth waterfront and expansion of Burnside Park, as well as initiated the construction of the Sportsplex. He retired after 20 years in politics but continued to be involved in community work until his passing. The items being considered for donation to DHM were given to donor, Harry Chapman, as he was part of the foundation appointed as executor of Mayor Brownlow's estate. The Fond consists of two series, 1. PHOTOGRAPHIC: (a) Negatives and prints of the 1971 Dartmouth flood (Hurricane Beth) (b) Box of aerial photos of Dartmouth area (some or all ?) taken by RCAF in 1960s, 1970s+) (c) Photo with inscription to Mayor Brownlow from the Dartmouth United Under 12 Soccer Team, dated 1981 (d1-2) Print, plus a copy, of City Hall, Alderney Drive, titled "Summer Morning" by James Bessey. (e1-2) Two large photo prints of ferries. 2. COMMUNICATIONS: (f) Dartmouth Business News magazine with Mayor Brownlow on cover, Sept/Oct 1985. (g) Card from Helen Creighton to Mrs. Genevieve Brownlow, May 24, 1983, referring to troubling times. (h) A funny card from Helen Creighton to Mayor Brownlow, apparently post-surgery. (i) Postcard book of Halifax photos. (j) Booklet "The Story of the Dartmouth Park" by G.S. Gosley . (k) Maps (Shubenacadie Canal System).
