Description : | A drawing of a three storey building. The bottom storey extends farther out in the back than the other two stories. There is a front door with steps and windows around all sides of the building. There is a street lamp and tree to the left. |
Commentaires : | This drawing depicts the Post Office; the building was in operation between 1909 and 1977. The mining boom generated by the Inverness Railway and Coal Company led to the establishment of a number of businesses in the town. Between 1902 and 1915, a number of institutions were erected in the town including churches, a hospital, and a school. The town boasted twenty-seven bars, seven musical bands, and athletic facilities in addition to a number of businesses. Following the closure of the mines in 1953, however, the population of the town shrunk and most of the businesses left; only twenty remained. This drawing, created by Ned MacDonald, likely was based on a photograph; the lines are quite precise and while the building has been drawn with a three-dimensional perspective, it still has a flat quality. While MacDonald has minimal formal training, he is, however, an important public figure in Inverness; MacDonald serves as the curator of the Inverness Miners' Museum and as a warden represents the Inverness-Glendale-Dunvegan area for the Municipality of the County of Inverness. In addition, he is a former teacher at Inverness Academy. |
