| Commentaires : | The man in this portrait is Canon Alexander MacIsaac. MacIsaac was born February 24, 1897 in Dunmore, Nova Scotia the son of Angus MacIsaac and Mary Ann Chisholm. He was Cape Breton's first native born priest; he was ordained May 27, 1923 in Antigonish. MacIsaac died on November 12, 1986 at the age of eighty-nine in Antigonish. The portrait was painted by artist, Neil Campbell. The painting does have some depth of field but the shadows and highlights around the eyes and on the forehead are not completely blended creating a sharp transition between dark and light. This painting likely was based on a photograph of MacIsaac. Campbell was born in Inverness on November 25,1949. He graduated from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in 1979. After graduation in 1980 he was a part-time employee of the Inverness Miners' Museum where he painted a collection of coal mining related portraits and buildings. He has been employed at the Inverness Cottage Workshop since 1980 as an instructor designing woodworking projects and construction jigs. This work is his main creative outlet. He also works part-time as a freelance photographer and is an active guitarist and band member. |
