Commentaires : | Belts like this one were standard for coal miner's of the period. The area's coal field extends fifty miles north of Port Hood to Chimney Corner and consists of four basins at Port Hood, Mabou, Inverness, and Chimney Corner. The Inverness area consisted largely of personal coal mines until 1890 when William Penn Hussey began commercial mining near Big River. The mines were later bought by Inverness Railway and Coal Company. By 1899, the proprietors, Sir William MacKenzie and Sir Donald Mann, began constructing a railway to Port Hastings to ship coal out to Maine, Prince Edward Island, and Europe. The final mine closed in 1958. |
