Fonctions : | A log is an instrument for measuring the distance travelled by a ship. It is towed astern and is so constructed that it turns as it is pulled through the water, the number of turns is automatically counted by the gauges on the log. It then had to be taken and read. Later, an attached gauge on deck did the recording of the turns. Logs were particularly important when sailing close to shore, when speed and distance are critical. Logs were commonly found on merchant sailing ships. The log would have been used in conjunction with an hour glass to measure time, so that speed could be calculated. The harpoon los is one of the oldest and rarest of all Thomas Walker's distance measuring apparatus. |
