| Commentaires : | This work by Anthony Flower is part of a handmade book of paintings. Flower is well known for using images from the illustrated periodicals of the mid 19th century. This work is taken from Sailing of the Hudson's Bay Company's Ships, From Gravesend, Illustrated London News, 21 June 1845, page 388, Vol. 6 No. 164. Flower altered the scene from several ships to just one, whether because of lack of space or his interest in only painting the primary, foreground ship. The back-dating of the painting to 1840 is indicative of him retroactively assigning dates and signatures to his works. |
