Commentaires : This work by Anthony Flower was originally part of a handmade book of paintings. Flower is well known for using images from the illustrated periodicals of the mid 19th century. This painting is based on a painting by Samuel Charles Brees that appeared as a drawing, Panorama of Port Nicholson - From a Drawing by Mr. S.C. Brees, in the Illustrated London News, 16 January 1847, page 37, Vol. 10 No. 246. Samuel Charles Brees (1810-1865) was an artist, engineer and surveyor, who served as the second Surveyor-General to the New Zealand Company for a period of three years beginning in 1841. Brees is best known for the book he compiled from sketches he made while in New Zealand. Many of these were published in England in 1847 by John Williams and Co., London, as a portfolio of engravings, and entitled Pictorial Illustrations of New Zealand. Since Flower copied other images in the 1847 Illustrated London News, it is clear he copied this work from the ILN as well, rather than Brees' book.
