Description : Electric powered, colour-blindness tester. It is a black, metal box with a dial on the front and a wooden handle.
Fonctions : While head of the medical and insurance division of the railway system, Charles H. Williams designed a lantern for detecting color blindness. He believed that a number of train engineers suffered from colour blindness which was the cause of a number of railway accidents in the 1800s. These color-sense tests were use to check railway employees for colour blindness.  The 18 coloured color-sense tests were an improvement on the earlier, more elaborate color-sense tests. It was found that the extra tests were not necessary and proved to be expensive to conduct. The test was electronic but could also be used with the use of an oil lamp with two burners.
