Description : Mauve cloth with embroidered names in various thread colours. Framed (wooden) and glass.
Commentaires : Came from Kaye MacPherson-Hendsbee-Rafuse's cedar chest and was given to the donor, who brought it to Port Hawkesbury in June,1992. This needlework picture is reminiscent of a signature quilt. Popular during the Victorian period, these quilts often were made for travelling relatives as a remembrance of home. They were also made for local community or church groups as a fundraiser; people would pay to have their name embroidered on the quilt and then the quilt would be sold at the end. This needlework appears to have been completed during the Second World War. The names stitched on appear to be those of relatives, mostly mothers or sweethearts, of soldiers overseas. The soldiers were from Port Hastings and the surrounding communities. The picture may have been stitched as a way to remember the sacrifices of the men and their families. This embroidered cloth came from Kaye MacPherson-Hendsbee-Rafuse's cedar chest and was given to her niece Margaret (Eldridge) Steele of Penticton, British Columbia. Margaret brought the item back to Port Hawkesbury in June, 1992, while on a trip with her daughter Ann. Kaye Rafuse died on March 18, 1987 (age 86) at Wakefield, Mass. She was born in Port Hawkesbury, the daughter of Farquhar and Elizabeth (Ross) MacPherson. Mrs. Rafuse and her first husband, Laurien Hendsbee, operated a pharmacy in Port hawkesbury for many years. She was a life member of the Port Hawkesbury Chapter, Eastern Star. Her second husband was Clifford A. Rafuse (Massachusetts). She was buried at Forest Hills Cemetery, Lynnfield, Mass.
