Description : Pictured is what appears to be a calf judging at the school fair.  A boy (identified in the Accession Book as Charlie Sutherland) is leading a calf.  A crowd is watching.  Port Hood Academy is in the background.  Port Hood Island is partially visible.
Commentaires : School fairs were revived in Inverness County after World War II. They were usually held in September. In Port Hood the fair was held on the grounds of the Port Hood Academy in the late 1940s and early 1950s. Schools from the area that took part were Hawthorne, Harbourview, Dunmore, Glencoe Station, Baden, Colindale, St. Peters Convent and Port Hood Island. Fairs were open not only to students but to anyone in the surrounding community who wished to enter cows, horses, sheep, handcrafts, baked items or preserves. Animals were paraded in a large ring in front of the Academy enclosed by a rope and were judged by a representative from the Department of Agriculture. Charlie Sutherland was the son of Betty and Alex (Sr.) Sutherland of Port Hood. The calfs name was Bossy and took home first prize.
Fonctions : The photo was found in Richard Gillis house. George Goodall is married to Monica MacIsaac. Monica is a sister to Martha who is married to Richards son, Richard. Richard Gillis (Feb 12, 1921 March 10, 2013) was born in Halifax to Duncan & Philomena (Moran) Gillis. The couple returned to their native Glencoe when Richard was a child. Richard enlisted in WWII at age 21. After the war he returned home and married Mamie MacIsaac in 1949. In 1951 they moved to Toronto where they worked and raised a family. In 1975 the moved home and built a house in Dungarry.
