Description : The children of Donald Sandy and Katie (MacMillan) MacDonald are standing in a row John, Mary Catherine, Catherine Jennet. This photo is cropped from the original image see CMP-19-2A.
Commentaires : Catherine Katie MacMillan (1875-1922) was the daughter of John & Katie (Rankin) MacMillan of St. Ninian. She married Donald (Sandy) MacDonald, son of Angus Big and Katie (Campbell) MacDonald, in Port Hood on October 21, 1913. They had 3 children and lived in Harbourview. About 1922 Donald went to Sydney to work in the mines. On the night of December 8, 1922 the family perished in a house fire. Fr. MacPherson consecrated the land where the house once stood because no remains were left of 2 of the children. Only partial remains of the mother and one child were recovered. Donald Sandy never recovered from the tragedy. He died in 1930 at age 59. According the death certificates, the childrens ages at time of death were: John age 6 Mary Catherine age 7 Catherine Jennet age 5 See Tragic Loss number 21 in the second Historical Events binder.
Fonctions : The copy was made by Donald MacMillan from the original photo that he owns. Donald is a grand nephew of Katie (MacMillan) MacDonald. Donald brought this photo to the museum on July 13, 2018. That was the same day, after years of searching, that he located the foundation of the old home that burned in 1922.
