Description : Two piece, lightweight, summer suit with skirt and jacket. The jacket has a collar and lapels and overlaps in the front and is secured by a belt of the same material that is held in place with belt loops and closed by a button. The jacket is decorated with a row of what is most likely Bakelite buttons on the side front, side back and cuffs. Both pieces are unlined and have bound seams. The long, ankle length skirt has side snaps and decorative buttons. A label catchstitched to the inside centre back seam marks it as being purchased from Filene's Dress Suit Shop, Boston.
Fonctions : This suit belonged to Margaret Farrell's maternal grandmother, Margaret Logue nee Macphee (sister in law to R.J Logue). She was born c. 1886 on Macphee Island, in the Bras D'Or Lakes, where her family farmed the land since it was first granted to them. Margaret Macphee left the farm when she was a young woman to work first as a milliner (Saint John?) then to the "Boston States" to work as a nurse's assistant. She lived to be 103 years old. Margaret donated the suit to the museum in 1991 when an exhibition on historic clothing was organized.
