Commentaires : | The donor's great-grandmother Martha Bell Sibley made this petticoat herself for her own wedding in 1871. Martha Sibley lived in Wittenburg, Colchester County. A petticoat, is an undergarment worn under a skirt or dress. In historical contexts (sixteenth to nineteenth centuries), a petticoat refers to any separate skirt worn with a gown, skirt, etc. They are not strictly speaking, underwear. They were worn to give warmth, or to give the skirt or dress the desired shape, as dictated by the fashion of the time. |
