| Description : | Small (4cm x 1cm) key, cast brass handle. Bow is solid and in the shape of a badge. Inscription fills the bow 'Watch maker and Jeweller' on one side 'A.H. Smith Truro Nova Scotia' on the other. At the top is a small ring, where it looks as though it might have been attached to a chain at one point. |
| Commentaires : | This watch key is from A.H. Smith's store in Truro, Nova Scotia. The store specialized in making watches and jewellery. Before the patent of the 'Crown Winding' Watch in the 1860 all watches had to be wound with a key. Arthur H. Smith established the A.H Smith store ca. 1870 at Truro Colchester County Nova Scotia. The store specialized in watch repair, jewellery cleaning, production and repair, and optometry services and supplies. From this location, Smith also issued marriage licences. Circa 1918 Smith's son A.A. Smith took over the business, operating under the same name until 1932 when the name was changed to Smith Jewellery Store. In 1938 John Doane purchased the business. |
