Description : Milk testing at Bear River School - Traveling teachers. Original photo that corresponds with the following writing was unable to be found, thus it was placed with a similar photo. Traveling Dairy School No. 2 From the earliest years the Nova Scotia Department of Agriculture recognized the important role of women in the development of agriculture in the Province. Miss Laura Rose and Miss Bella Miller were instructors for a "short course" which introduced around the Province modern labour-saving methods of production for dairy products. Miss Rose visited municipalities in Cape Breton (Traveling Dairy School No.1), reporting that "some parts are very rough, and the roads terrible to travel over in a dairy wagon". Miss Miller visited communities on the mainland (Traveling Dairy School No. 2), including Colchester County, where "the classes held [at the Provincial Normal School Science building (now the Colchester Historical Society Museum)] by prof. H.W. Smith of Truro, had awakened an interest in that line of work." Milk and dairy products, which could not be kept for any period of time, were normally looked after by the women and were, along with fresh eggs, a source of independent income for many farm women. Any improvement in productivity was likely to directly improve the farm woman's standard of living, by increasing what was called her "pocket book" money. The photograph of a Dairy School No.2 class in 1904 shows that it was made up primarily of women, with a few interested men observing from the background. Miss Miller is shown in the centre foreground, assisted by the man to the left in striped shirt, bow tie and apron, Mr. H.G. Payne of Granville Ferry.
