Commentaires : | This black-and-white gingham half-apron with smocking across the stomach was made and worn by my mother, Edith (Goodwin) Main in the mid-1950's in her home in Onslow on her old Singer sewing machine. Sewing an apron was one of the first projects given to girls at this time and Edith used this project as a leader in the Onslow 4-H Club. Also note the pocket-Mom always had to have a pocket for her ever-present (and much appreciated newly introduced) Kleenex (no other brand would do!). |
Fonctions : | This apron is representative of the style of aprons that was popular in the mid-1950's and of the custom of sewing articles in the home. Using a checked piece of gingham gave the hand-crafter a ready-made grid for smocking. Aprons were always worn by "the lady of the house" to keep her dress clean-much easier to wash and iron than a whole dress! |
