Description : One wooden picture frame of a pair; Flowers on frame hand painted in corners.
Commentaires : This frame was hand-carved and painted by an unknown artist. The creation of three dimensional figures out of wood is an art form known as wood sculpture. The wood carving techniques employed in creating these sculptures is practiced throughout the world. Evidence for the practise extends back to the Stone Age with the Thinker of Cernavoda recovered from the banks of the Danube in modern-day Romania. Carving, however, became quite popular in Europe during the medieval period; a number of altarpieces and religiously themed sculptures were created. The art form underwent a revival during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries although there are numerous modern artists who use wood as a sculpture medium including Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth, and Ernst Barlach. Both softwoods and hardwoods can be used as a medium; softwoods are easier to manipulate but are not as durable while hardwoods are more difficult to work with but have a longer endurance. Wood can be carved more precisely than either stone or bone, but is more sensitive to the elements and, thus, is used mainly for indoor pieces. Tools with special edges are used to create specific gouge shapes while chisels create lines. Wood can be chip carved, relief carved, or Scandinavian flat-planed. Once the carving is shaped, the artist smoothes the wood using various grains of sandpaper and rasps. The picture frame motif with leaves at the corners is not uncommon. Each carving, however, is unique influenced by the experiences of the artist and the shape of the materials with which he works.
