| Commentaires : | The donor knew Bob Chambers from his youth, as both lived in Wolfville. Chambers was older than the donor so they were not close at that time. Chambers' father, J. D. Chambers, operated a dry goods store in the building later bought by C. H. Porter in 1919. He later ran a stationery store on Main Street, and was Mayor of Wolfville in 1905, 1906, 1909 - 1911. The family lived in the Joseph Starr/Margaret Maria DeWolf house at 94 Main Street. During the Depression, Bob Chambers was living at home in Wolfville and the donor came to know him better. Chambers became a cartoonist for the Halifax papers, first the Chronicle (Liberal), then the Herald (Conservative) because they paid petter, and finally the Chronicle Herald/Mail Star. The donor became a professor at Kings College in Halifax, and a public relations executive with Imperial Oil. During this time they became friends and saw each other on a regular basis over coffee at Chambers' house. The donor was interested in Chambers' drawings which were lying in piles all over the house, and which Chambers did not appear to value particularly. If the donor admired one, then Chambers would say to him 'Take it' and often the donor did. When the donor was at Imperial Oil, he would often engage Chambers to draw a special cartoon as a gift for a retiring staff member, for which the donor had a budget of $200. The donor apologized for the small payment, but Chambers was very pleased with it, because cartoonists were not well paid and this exceeded what he would have recieved for a cartoon done for the paper. |
