Description : | Grey melton wool men's ankle-length spats. The leather strap is worn around the bottom of the boot or shoe and attaches to a small 2.2cm buckle worn on the outside. The four snaps for closing the spats are worn on the outside of the foot. The instep seam, and top and bottom edges are bound in narrow .7cm leather strips. The spats are machine topstitched. |
Commentaires : | These spats are a later style, with the addition of snaps. Gradually, by the 30s, spats were out of fashion but were retained for wear by businessmen and for formal dress. Dalton MacKinnon (b.1898-1990?) was fourteen years older than his sister, the donor. Both were born and brought up in Yarmouth. Doris never married and after the family home in Yarmouth was sold, she came to Wolfville to be near her brother. Dalton McKinnon ran a pharmacy in Wolfville from 1929 when he took over the business of George V. Rand, until 1967 when it was sold. He was one of the founding members of the Wolfville Historical Society. |
Fonctions : | These spats belonged to the donor's brother, Dalton MacKinnon. |
