| Description : | Phonograph; wood, metal. Cabinet style; rectangular wood case (possibly oak) with hinged lid and locking brace on left side. Cabinet front has removable wooden cross-hatched frame with fabric attached to back. Behind the frame, within the cabinet, a horn/speaker is located. Inside, beside the horn, is stamped "510." On top of the cabinet, under the lid, there is a metal turntable covered with green coloured felt. A metal plate is attached to interior left casing: "Trademark/Thomas A. Edison/EDISON DISC PHONOGRAPH/Patented Nov. 17, 1903. Jan. 30, 1906. Feb. 4, 1908. March 11, 1913. Sept 15, 1914. March 23, 1916/ BM 19 SM 23276 |
| Commentaires : | This is an Edison Diamond Disc phonograph, a type of phonograph which was introduced in 1912. Instead of the previous cylinder format, these played only Edison-made discs, which recorded the sound vertically in the groove rather than laterally. The sound produced by these discs was superior to any other system at the time, but both the discs and the phonograph were more expensive than their competitors. Because of this, and because of the discs incompatibility with other players, Edison's market share dropped and he eventually had to stop production in 1929. |
