Description : | Horse drawn model WWI Red Cross tin four wheeled ambulance grey in colour. Two uniformed medic figurines, one with rifle, are seated on the forward bench. The medic holding the rifle is attached to the seat, while the other is not. Two horse figurines are harnessed to the front. A small tin Red Cross flag is attached to the top of the ambulance. The Red Cross symbol is painted on either side of the ambulance. Two water barrels hang under the ambulance. Horses are brown in colour with brown saddles and brightly painted blue and red saddle pads. Horses are both attached to separate wooden bases each with four wheels. |
Commentaires : | Horse drawn ambulances were used in the few years of the First World War. Motorized ambulance did become more common, though horse drawn ambulanced remained in use. This model ambulance looks like it was modeled after the Mark 3 and Mark 4 style British ambulance. These ambulances were able to transport two stretchers and six walking wounded. There was often very little that could be done for a wounded soldier before transporting him to a dressing station. Ambulance drivers would try and stabilized limbs and stop bleeding, though in some cases nothing more was possible. Often the most relief came in the form of a cup of water. Thus, all ambulances carried two water barrels. The horses attached to this model, though original, appear to have not been created for this ambulance set. Horses used for pulling ambulances and wagons would not have been saddled and certainly not so a brightly coloured. The loose medic figurine could have been intended to ride one of the horses. |
