Description : | Military trophy consisting of a dark, finished wooden base surmounted by a silver cup. The lid of the cup is a statuette of a uniformed military man. Flanking the central cup and statuette are two silver cannons. Each of the cannons are flanked by two small clusters of silver cannonballs. The etching on the cup commemorates the first place finish of the No. 1 Company, Prince Edward Island Battalion, in General Efficiency of the Garrison Artillery, 1894. |
Commentaires : | The Dominion Artillery Association awarded this trophy to the No. 1 Company, Prince Edward Island Battalion in 1894. The artillery battalion, part of the Prince Edward Island Regiment, manned defensive positions at the Prince Edward Battery. Prince Edward Battery, located at Fort Edward in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, was built by the British in 1805. It was originally manned by British forces, but in 1864 responsibility for the battery was transferred to the Prince Edward Island volunteer militia, who manned the battery into the early 20th century. Although the guns at the Prince Edward Battery never saw use in action, the artillery men who manned them were well versed in their use and considered among the most successful units in the country. |
Fonctions : | The Dominion Artillery Association awarded this trophy to the No. 1 Company, Prince Edward Island Battalion in 1894. The contest for which this trophy was awarded tested the unit's marksmanship skills, speed and efficiency at operating the artillery. |
