Description : | Spring hole liner for livestock; Large hollowed out tree stump. Unfinished, bark still present but crumbling. Top and bottom of stump are open. Left side has an open groove all the way down--side and top are splintered. Top edge of log is very uneven. While the edges are rough, one area is even and smooth. The top edge drops down into a groove approximately 12 cm X 6cm. Rounded and smooth, worn down. Bottom edge is also uneven. |
Commentaires : | This tree stump would have been placed in a spring. Instead of dissipating into the ground, the water would catch in the stump, creating a well from which animals could drink. The smooth, worn down area is from a rope, which would have been attached to a bucket to catch water. The rough, splintery edges are from cattle chewing on the wood. This liner was taken out of a spring hole (Church Yard Creek), on the farm of Wilton Ramsey, Malpeque, in June 1986. |
