Commentaires : | The Garden of the Gulf Museum in Montague, PEI is located in what was originally the Montague Bridge Post Office and Customs House. Built in 1888, the Post Office and Customs House served in this location until 1954. Montague was an active shipping port and the Post Office and Customs House was a hub of activity. A Customs House was a location to house the offices for the government officials who processes the paperwork for the import and export of goods. These officials collected customs duty on imported goods. Typically, Customs Offices were located in a seaport or a city on a major river with access to the ocean. These cities acted as a port of entry into a country and the government was interested in locating Customs Houses in these cities in order to collect the taxes and regulate commerce. |
