| Description : | Long columnar buoy whistle made of brass. The upright whistle and valve are brass casting. The whistle bell is made of twelve gage bronze, 25.5 cm in diameter by approximately 45 cm long. It is supported by a bronze spindle screwed to a valve casting, to which the whistle bell is riveted and soldered. The whistle valve contains two cork balls. These balls are also located between the guides to assure proper seating on the machined surface valve seats. A standard 10cm pipe extends from the valve and is welded to the top head of the buoy. |
| Commentaires : | Wave action operated fog whistles are used on lighted and unlighted buoys especially designed with a long counterweight center tube, through which the air is compressed by the up and down motion of the buoy in a seaway. The air is compressed on the downward motion of the buoy and allowed to escape through a small aperture in the bell casting, blowing the whistle. On the upward motion the partial vacuum created in the whistle tube causes the balls in the whistle to lift and air is again drawn into the tube, compressed on the downward movement of the buoy, and the operation is repeated. This whistling buoy is on display on the third floor of the West Point Lighthouse. Bell style buoys were used more often than the whistling style of buoy, however, one like this would have been used at West Point, three or four miles out, at the end of the reef. It is probably Prescott made, or copied by Prescott, meaning; made at the Department of Marine and Fisheries-Dominion Lighthouse Depot in Prescott, Ontario, established in 1903. This depot made lenses and all related lighthouse keeping apparatus and supplied the D.O.T. (Department of Transportation) in Prince Edward Island and surrounding area. It was a center for experiments in illumination, light station equipment, and manufacturing. This source for lighthouse equipment would greatly reduce Canada's former dependence on foreign suppliers.
