Description : | Upright cylindrical brass burner with rectangular center and pipe projection at top. Silver solder, coated in black soot. Prescott made. |
Commentaires : | Used in most coastal lights this burner would be connected to a kerosene oil lamp. The light keeper would pour alcohol in it to help start the flame. The alcohol would turn to vapour with the heat so that it would be shooting the flame like a flame thrower. In the winter it would take about a half an hour to start the light. The burner is made from all brass and silver solder. Prescot made, meaning made at the Department of Marine and Fisheries-Dominion Lighthouse Depot in Prescott, Ontario, established in 1903. This depot made lenses and all related lighthouse keeping apparatus and supplied the D.O.T. (Department of Transportation) in Prince Edward Island and surrounding area. It was a center for experiments in illumination, light station equipment, and manufacturing. This source for lighthouse equipment would greatly reduce Canada's former dependence on foreign suppliers.
