Description : Basically, this is a round medal with protrusions top and bottom. A ring on the edge at top allows wearing on a chain or pin. A small round steel ring is attached to this ring. The obverse shows the heads of the queen and king in profile, both wearing crowns. They face to the left as viewed. The date is on the small projection at bottom. The royal coat of arms is above the date and below the heads. This is flanked by flags (Union Jack) and maple leaves. The reverse shows the coat of arms of Canada complete with supporting lion and unicorn and surmounted by a royal crown. The words Donion of Canada appear in a semi-circle around the coat of arms. The makers name is below.
Commentaires : The King and Queen visited Canada between May 17 and June 15, 1939. This included a side trip to the United States. It was the first time a reigning monarch had visited Canada and the first such visit to the USA. They visited every province, mainly by special train. This included passing through Campbellton. Many souvenirs were produced. this medal is one of them. Birks is a significant firm designing, manufacturing and retailing jewelry. The compnay headquarters are in Montreal, but there are stores across Canada and the United States, some operating under differenet names. The company started with a small store in 1879. Today it operates as the Birks Group. Previously it was Henry Birks and Sons and, after a partnershi0p with an American firm, Birks and Mayor.
