Description : This is a woman's travelling suit consisting of a jacket and a long skirt. The jacket has long sleeves with elaborate cuffs that include three buttons, The jacket closes with seven buttons, two of which re missing. The collar is moderately high, and would have risen about one inch on the neck when worn.  The skirt is long and would have reached the to the ankles or lower. There is a partial over-skirt that would have been supported by a bustle.  Both jacket and skirt have encircling bands in a different material and colour.
Commentaires : This item has been dated by Peter Larocque of New Brunswick Museum to 1875 to 1885, most likely to 1876 or slightly after. The Victorian period produced elaborate women's clothing largely designed to hide the female form, but in other ways it emphasized it. The bustle, for instance, exagerated one aspect of anatomy while the wasp waist emphasized another. Although this example is not designed for the most extreme form of bustle and is obviously intended for a larger woman, it shows the general tendency of the time. These travelling suits were intended for journeys in horse-drawn vehicles and provided warmth and a degree of comfort.
