Commentaires : Victoria celebrated her Diamond Jubilee in 1897. Although not popular when she came to the throne at the age of 18 in 1837, she would come to be the dominant figure in the world for most of the 19th century. She died in 1901, having been the longest ruling British monarch until that term was exceeded by the reign of the current Queen. Victoria's Diamond Jubilee was celebrated throughout the Empire and Commonwealth. The number of Jubilee medals of one type or another that have survived shows the extent to which her reign shaped society during that period. The museum has several Diamond Jubilee medals, but this is the first of this particular type. The obverse was created by medalist Frank Bowcher of London (1864-1938 and was used on a variety of medals issued in commonwalth countries. In some cases, they were struck on the authority of mayors of particular cities or, as in this case, by Governors-General, The medal was struck by Spink & Son of London. Medals with the same obverse were struck in white metal, bronze and silver.
