Description : | Fish spear constructed of wood, bone, and metal. Twine wrapped around base. Metal teeth. |
Fonctions : | This type of spear was used by the Eskimos and Indians in the northern regions to aguire mainly Atlantic Salmon, Arctic Char, and large trout. Since there are other similar designs in the Miramichi area, it would not be fair to say who was first to design this implement but I believe it to be generally accepted that it was a tool of the Eskimo and they were probably the originators. The spear was originally constructed entirely of bone and through the years has been modified with repairs of metal and a wooden handle. There should be a five to six foot wooden handle attached for display in full form. I have traveled a lot over the years and cannot recall the location but do remember finding it on a small community dump. Evidently the previous owner decided it was not worth the bother of a new handle. |
