Description : | Complete, with warp strings, heddles, warp cloth, beater, shutttle. At an earlier date, the beater was suspended from the top, rather than at the bottom of the loom. The frame was made heavier to withstand the additional stress and strain. The loom is a counter balance loom with four pedals. The warp beam looks to be rough hewn from a tree trunk. |
Commentaires : | Owned by Jenette Russell (Mrs. Solomon Russell) of Deep Cove, Grand Manan, New Brunswick. c. 1850s. Reassembled in the 1960s by Patricia Jenkins of Gagetown who dated it slightly later than 1850. |
Fonctions : | Used to make cloth from spun yarns using a warp and a weave pattern. Blankets, towels, cloth for clothing and many other woven items would have been made on this loom. It is thought that the loom was used at the remote Gannet Rock Lighthouse (1831) at one time. Gannet Rock is the second oldest wooden lighthouse in Canada, located in the Grand Manan archipelago. |
