Description : Oil painting of Swallowtail Lighthouse from vantage point of Pettes Cove, overlooking a winter scene beach with snow and trees in the foreground. The frame was made later by Evelyn Zwicker (nee Wilcox), and is of wood covered with an inner row of tiny clam-like shells and an outer row of tiny periwinkle shells imbedded, at evenly spaced out intervals, in sand.
Commentaires : Nelson Greenlaw was a well known islander and a self taught artist who painted many local scenes, landscapes and shipwrecks on and around the island of Grand Manan. He began painting in the 1920s while recovering from a winter storm frostbite loss of most of his fingers and toes. He may have studied with Wesley Griffin, a formally trained island and NY City artist who was operating a summer Art School at the Whistle, Grand Manan, during this period. Nelson was still actively painting in the 1960s. The Swallowtail Lighthouse (built 1860) is an iconic island image and is one of the most photographed and painted lighthouses in Canada.
