Description : This is a manually powered sewing machine made of dark colored metal. It is arranged in a horizontal fashion. At one end is a large metal wheel with a small knob set perpendicular on the outer side. The lower section of the sewing machine has a flat horizontal metal plate with a bulged section at the other end from the wheel. Below the horizontal plate is a vertical section connected to a light colored marble stand. The upper section has a thick tubular piece of metal extending in the same direction as the lower horizontal plate. At the end of the tubular arm near the large wheel is a prong rising vertically from the upper edge that holds the bobbin. At the other end of the arm is a rectangular block of metal with a narrow metal tubular assembly set vertically through the block. There is a narrow metal tube below the arm connecting the large wheel with the block and assembly.
Commentaires : This sewing machine was made by John D. Lawlor of Montreal. Lawlor had a factory in the St. Anne area of Montreal. He was the exclusive distributor of Singer sewing machines in Montreal c.1870. Singer was the largest producer of sewing machines in the 19th century. One of its most effective business practices was the sale of franchises to various distributors. This greatly expanded the distribution of Singer sewing machines. Through the practice of franchising Singer became a brand name the world over. The original owner of the sewing machine was Mrs. Hugh S. Smith of Springfield, New Brunswick.
