Commentaires : | By the age of six, girls in the Victorian era were expected to have begun learning to sew. As their skills improved, women would take great pride in their sewing and embroidery which would often be demonstrated through the production of elaborate samplers. A number of implements became essential to every Victorian woman's sewing basket, including a pincushion. "Pynpyllows" as they were called became commercially available during the 1800s and were produced to commemorate historical events. Pincushions shaped like hearts given by gentlemen to their sweethearts as well as exchanged between close friends. Later, this item became a novelty as they were produced in a variety of shapes including shoes, fans, dolls, teacups and vegetables. |
